April 26, 2025 - now for Venice

 We are up early and leave Croatia very quickly to re-enter
Slovenia. We go through a border crossing where we actually had to stop and show our passports. After about an hour, we enter Italy where we also have a border crossing, but don’t have to stop. There were Slovenian border guards on one side and three Italian soldiers on the other side, but they were all watching a kid on a go kart having fun. I’m not sure what that was all about.


Well, we have driven through many small towns on our “no toll” journey and have enjoyed it thoroughly. I got so tired of hearing our GPS lady tell us that we were gonna go through a roundabout again. And Italy has tons of advertisements on the road just like at home. You didn’t see that through the more eastern countries.





Finally, we reach Mestre where we’ll park our car for 3 days while we go to Venice. If anything that has stressed me out on this trip is the transportation. We are both such hillbillies, I feel like the Clampets . Richard is Jed and although I know I’m granny, I choose to be Ellie Mae.(Doreen gave me that nickname about 72 years ago and called me that til the day she left this world and I still think of it today.)

OK now we have more transportation as we have arrived at the train station which was only 50 m from the car park. We actually go to the train ticket counter and buy our train ticket just so we know what we’re doing.

We have consolidated, what we’ll need for the next 3 days into one case as I know it’s gonna be a bit of a walk to our B&B once we get to Venice. We have a 1990 m walk and thank God we’re dragging only one case because every bridge we go across the stairs are up and then down.

We arrive at Alloggi Serena and get instructions from, Alec, our host up to room #3 on the second floor. Looks pretty comfortable with a king size bed and a bathroom with a bidet! Fancy……except it’s only 3 feet wide  


We find a place for dinner where we have a pizza, beer and some wine and then back home to bed. It’s been another long day

Day 4 April 4, 2025

 This morning we don’t get up until 9 AM which is extremely unusual for Richard. He’s a real early riser but I think I walked the living hell out of him yesterday.  I’ve made reservations to visit the Catacombs of Paris today, but it’s not until 230 so we don’t rush getting ourselves ready this morning. In fact, we hauled two mattresses down from the upper loft to make the bed more comfortable for us tonight. I have to say that that is one of the worst parts of this little apartment. The bed is not meant for us creatures of comfort.  Today I’m going to give Richard a break and we’ll take the Metro down to the Catacombs. The transportation system in and around the Paris area is amazing. There’s the RER train system, the Metro and buses and trams. And there are all kinds of other things like taxis, Ubers and thousands of bicycles and scooters and motorcycles.  The catacombs are a network of about 300 km of tunnels under the city of Paris. May 15, 2025 - Home Sweet Home

 We’re up bright and early even though our flight has been delayed till around 2 o’clock this afternoon. We have enough time to go for a nice long walk in a park right beside the hotel. I even got to take a stroll through one last graveyard. I guess I keep hoping to see my last name in one of them, but alas, I have not. One of the wheel struts from a Concorde which began its career in 1985 and officially retired in November 2003 Charles de Gaulle airport is still referred to as Roissy by Parisians.  The hotel provides a shuttle to the airport and I’m glad we have given ourselves lots of time because this airport is huge. In fact, I understand it is the largest airport in Europe. I swear we must’ve got our 10,000 steps just walking in the airport from check-in then security and then to our boarding terminal.
