April 27, 2025 - Beautiful Venezia

Image
Our breakfast is included at this B&B and we go down to the tiniest breakfast area I’ve ever seen. Marcella has prepared our food and she is so friendly and met our every need. The first thing we do is buy a two day pass on the Vaporetto, which is a water passenger ferry. I must say the transportation on this island is the simplest I’ve come across and you can just go anywhere you want. It’s not always the fastest because there are so many tourists here but it gets you where you wanna go. It’s Sunday today so it’s pretty busy. We head down to San Marco’s Basilica, which was originally built between 829-836 and then rebuilt again between 1063-1094. This is probably the top tourist destination in Venice and we walked around and viewed the outside, but did not go in to the building. I know this sounds a little crazy  but once you’ve been into one of the huge basilicas, they’re all very similar and we just can’t observe all of that culture in one month. Lol. From here we hop ...

April 26, 2025 - now for Venice

Image
We are up early and leave Croatia very quickly to re-enter Slovenia. We go through a border crossing where we actually had to stop and show our passports. After about an hour, we enter Italy where we also have a border crossing, but don’t have to stop. There were Slovenian border guards on one side and three Italian soldiers on the other side, but they were all watching a kid on a go kart having fun. I’m not sure what that was all about. Well, we have driven through many small towns on our “no toll” journey and have enjoyed it thoroughly. I got so tired of hearing our GPS lady tell us that we were gonna go through a roundabout again. And Italy has tons of advertisements on the road just like at home. You didn’t see that through the more eastern countries. Finally, we reach Mestre where we’ll park our car for 3 days while we go to Venice. If anything that has stressed me out on this trip is the transportation. We are both such hillbillies, I feel like the Clampets . Richard is Jed ...

April 25, 2025 Opatija, Croatia

Image
Good morning Opatija, Croatia 🇭🇷  It rained last night but the temperature is very nice. Since we have such a wonderful kitchen, we are able to cook up a good breakfast for ourselves. Richard does some scrambled eggs with sausage and cheese in them with some toast. Very tasty. We set off for a little fishing village called Volosca. We will be walking there as it’s only about 3 km. I put what I think is the right path in my GPS and off we go. About one and a half kilometres into the walk I look at my GPS again and oops we’re going in the wrong direction and the weather hasn’t improved either so we’re getting a little wet. We get turned around and follow the road through town above the coast until we see the sign for Voloska. It’s a delightful little fishing village right on the sea and we get directed to a seafood Restaurant. The guy makes Richard look pretty small doesn’t he? Richard is delighted with the seafood soup and then the seafood salad. It is just full of the fresh...
