April 30, 2025 Pisa and Lucca

Another beautiful sunny, hot day. I cannot believe the weather that we’ve had on our entire trip almost. An absolutely comfortable nights sleep and we’re ready for anything today.

I pull out the big map just to have a look and see if I can try and trace our journey through Italy so far. I cannot believe some of the roads we’ve been on.

Now it’s time to get rid of some of this hair of mine. I realize that it’s just too bloody long! Out come the scissors and comb and Richard cuts a foot off of it.

We stroll around in their backyard for a bit, and Richard has his snoop.

Our breakfast lady Marcella from Venice had said “Don’t bother with Pisa, it’s just a big tower”. We decided to go anyway, and we were not sorry. It was less than an hour away and WOW! Actually seeing that “leaning tower “was amazing. It really is leaning. A lot!
Pisa is walled around the cathedral and the tower.

Of course everyone needs a picture holding the tower up.

Now on we go to Lucca where the old part of the city is also walled. We walk through the great big entry and it’s another amazing place with not nearly the crowds that we experienced in other big centres but still a lot of people.

But first, some lunch.

Now we start on the walk around the wall. There is a great path up on top.

We spot the cathedral of St. Martino and veer off the path. We have decided we’re going to view the cathedral, the church, climb the towers and visit the museum. The tower of the church had 120 steps. That wasn’t so bad now I want to climb the bell tower at the cathedral which is 217 steps. We did them both!! Everything is so steeped in history. I can’t even observe it at all. Everything is so spectacular that it blows your mind.

View from the top and he’s still smiling

I forbade him from ringing it. Lol.

This looks just like the Pieta that they have in the Vatican.

A carving of St. John the Baptist, who was beheaded.

It’s been a long drive and a long day so home we go to recover and have some homemade dinner and a game of Phase 10, which Richard won.
