May 9, 2023 - On the road again towards Paris
This morning we hit the road pretty early, but are stopping at the market in Dijon before we leave town. It’s in the old part exactly where we were yesterday but the market was closed then.
This market is absolutely amazing. There is a huge area inside that’s probably 2 to 3 times larger than Granville Island in Vancouver and the outside is circled by vendors selling produce and the usual knickknacks that you would see at a local flea market. The inside of the market is just full of people, selling fish, meats, cheeses, flowers, produce and bread. I think Richard feels like he has died and gone to heaven. Actually, he said that it was like going to hell because he couldn’t buy a whole lot. Everything was so fresh and looked delicious. And the place was packed with local people doing their shopping. Just about everybody had a rolling cart that was stuffed with food. We did buy a small piece of cheese, ham and some croissants. I have now discovered that this will be my favourite sandwich making bread. They’re so soft and fresh.
We have another beautiful sunny day The temperature is cooler, but you would expect that as we are heading further north than we have been.
We are now off the toll highway, and we’re moving along pretty good until we take the wrong exit and our route has now changed. We didn’t realize it was actually for the better as we ended up going through some really nice small villages. We came upon a picnic area that was on a bike trail by a canal and a field of yellow canola. We made our lunch with the supplies that we had bought and watched as the bicyclists went by on their trail
We arrive at our apartment in a little town of Vermenton around 2 o’clock and check in to Reviere de la Tour. We take a walk through the little town admiring the old buildings. Unfortunately, the old church was not open so we’re unable to go have a look, but we did find a supermarket where we could buy enough food for our breakfast.and dinner as we are here for two days.
I did, however, book the balance of our trip until we leave on May 15. It’s bitter sweet I must say as I have loved Europe and everything we’ve seen and done.
